The Sonata is dedicated to the memory of the Roumanian-born pianist Clara Haskil, a greatly gifted artist from the earlier part of the twentieth century. One of the most distinctive qualities of the recordings Haskil made is a certain orchestral sonority, especially with her Beethoven. In the Sonata I seek to capture these qualities in addition to the spiritual world evoked by Haskil’s music.
In addition, the Sonata reflects a concern for structural compression that was influenced by late Beethoven; this influence seems appropriate given the close connection that Haskil obviously felt to that composer. David Hush
The premiere of the Sonata was given by the American pianist David Holzman in Monmouth, New Jersey on 16th May 1999.
